Abstract

It is an undisputed fact that Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920) was the greatest Indian mathematician of modern times. He was also one of the greatest mathematicians of all times in the world. For assessing the greatness of Ramanujan, we have to answer the following questions: • What is the field of investigation of mathematicians? What are the typical problems they discuss? • How does a mathematician think and work? • What are the qualities of first-rate mathematician? • What are the qualities of a great mathematician? We shall attempt to answer these questions with the help of Ramanujan’s work on partitions and try to do this at a level at which any intelligent person with a knowledge of high school mathematics can appreciate the answers.
